UP Police ASI Typing Test: Rules, Mangal Font, and Layouts

The Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) conducts a mandatory Typing Skill Test for the recruitment of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Confidential, Clerk, and Accounts posts.

The typing test is qualifying in nature, but it has very strict rules—especially regarding the Hindi keyboard layout, which catches many candidates off guard.

1. Speed & Accuracy Requirements

Candidates are tested in both Hindi and English typing:

  • English Typing Speed: 30 Words Per Minute (WPM) (minimum 85% accuracy).
  • Hindi Typing Speed: 25 Words Per Minute (WPM) (minimum 85% accuracy).
  • Hindi Typing Speed (ASI Accountant): 15 Words Per Minute (WPM).
  • Time Duration: 15 minutes for each language.
  • Time Gap: There is a mandatory 10-minute break between the Hindi and English typing sessions.

2. Keyboard Layout and Font Rules (Crucial!)

Unlike other Hindi typing tests which allow options, UP Police ASI is highly specific:

  • Hindi Font: Unicode Mangal Font is mandatory.
  • Hindi Keyboard Layout: You must use the Inscript keyboard layout.
  • Not Permitted: Remington Gail (Indic Input 3), Devlys, or Krutidev layouts are NOT permitted in this test.
  • English Layout: Standard QWERTY layout.

[!IMPORTANT] If you have practiced Hindi typing on Krutidev or Remington Gail, you must transition and learn the Inscript layout to qualify for the UP Police ASI exam.

3. Backspace and Editing Rules

  • Backspace is Allowed: You can use the backspace key to correct errors during the test.
  • Blind Mode: The typing environment is in “blind mode”—meaning errors are not highlighted in red/green in real-time. You must proofread your own typed content.

4. Evaluation and Mistakes Criteria

Errors are evaluated using a standard point penalty system:

  • Full Mistakes (1 Point): Omission of words, substitution of words, addition of extra words, spelling errors, or half-typed words.
  • Half Mistakes (0.5 Point): Spacing mistakes (double spaces or missing spaces) and wrong capitalization.

5. Tips for Success

  1. Practice Exclusively on Inscript Layout: Since Remington Gail is disabled, spend all your practice time learning Inscript. You can select the Inscript keyboard layout on the Typing Nexus Hindi Typing Practice Portal.
  2. Maintain 90%+ Accuracy: The passing accuracy threshold is 85%, but aiming for 90%+ ensures a safe buffer under exam hall pressure.
