In this article, we explain the detailed evaluation guidelines, speed requirements, and how mistakes are calculated.

1. Speed & Key Depressions Requirement

  • English Medium:

    • Required speed: 35 words per minute (WPM).
    • Corresponding key depressions: 10500 Key Depressions Per Hour (KDPH).
    • Test duration: 10 minutes.
    • Total characters to type: approximately 1750 key depressions.
  • Hindi Medium:

    • Required speed: 30 words per minute (WPM).
    • Corresponding key depressions: 9000 Key Depressions Per Hour (KDPH).
    • Test duration: 10 minutes.
    • Total characters to type: approximately 1500 key depressions.

2. Types of Mistakes & Evaluation

SSC classifies typing errors into two categories: Full Mistakes and Half Mistakes.

A. Full Mistakes

A full error is counted when you make the following mistakes:

  1. Omission of a word or figure: Skipping a word present in the passage.
  2. Substitution of a wrong word/figure: Typing a different word instead of the original word.
  3. Addition of a word/figure: Typing an extra word not present in the passage.
  4. Spelling errors: Typing a word with incorrect spelling (transposing letters, omitting letters, etc.).

B. Half Mistakes

A half error is counted for:

  1. Spacing errors: Not leaving a space between two words or leaving double/multiple spaces.
  2. Punctuation errors: Omitting a punctuation mark or adding an incorrect punctuation mark.
  3. Wrong Capitalization: Typing a capital letter instead of a lowercase letter, or vice versa (e.g., typing “the” as “The” or “THE”).

3. How Error Percentage is Calculated

The formula used by SSC to calculate the percentage of errors is:

Error % = [ Full Mistakes + (Half Mistakes / 2) ] / Total Words (or Characters) Typed x 100

Error Relaxation Limit

SSC provides relaxation on error percentages based on category:

  • UR (General): Up to 7% error allowed.
  • OBC / EWS / SC / ST / PwD: Up to 10% error allowed.

If your error percentage exceeds these limits, you will be disqualified, regardless of how high your typing speed is.

4. Pro-Tips for SSC CHSL Typing

  1. Focus on Accuracy First: Since the relaxation limit is strict (7% for General), focus on accuracy. Speed will naturally improve with regular practice. You can track and monitor your error rates on Typing Nexus free test dashboard.
  2. Practice on Physical Keyboards: Do not practice on laptop keyboards. Get a standard desktop keyboard (such as TVS Gold, HP, or Dell membrane keyboard) as they are commonly used in exam halls.
  3. Familiarity with Rhythms: Maintain a steady typing rhythm instead of bursting and stopping.
