SSC CGL DEST Typing Test: Rules, Speed, and Evaluation

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination includes a mandatory Data Entry Speed Test (DEST). It is a qualifying-only test, meaning your marks do not count towards the final merit list, but failing it results in immediate disqualification.

DEST has strict evaluation criteria. Understanding the exact regulations around speed, accuracy, and formatting is critical to passing the exam.

1. Speed & Key Depressions Requirement

The DEST is conducted on a computer in English. The requirements are:

  • Target Key Depressions: Approximately 2,000 key depressions.
  • Time Duration: 15 minutes.
  • Equivalent Speed: This equates to a speed of roughly 27 WPM (or approximately 35 WPM in practice to comfortably cover errors and margin).
  • Standard Word Definition: 1 word is calculated as 5 key depressions (including spaces, punctuation, and letters).

2. Key Rules: Backspace and Navigation

Unlike some strict exams where the backspace is disabled:

  • Backspace is Allowed: You can use the backspace key to delete and correct your typing errors.
  • Arrow Keys: You can use the arrow keys to navigate within the text area to correct spelling mistakes.
  • Scroll Bar: If the text passage is long, you may need to use the scroll bar to view the entire content.

[!WARNING] While backspace is permitted, using it excessively will slow you down. If you run out of time and fail to complete the 2,000 key depressions, you will be penalized heavily. Focus on typing accurately the first time.

3. Types of Mistakes & Evaluation Criteria

SSC classifies typing errors into two categories:

A. Full Mistakes

A full mistake is counted for:

  1. Omission of a word/figure: Skipping words present in the original text.
  2. Substitution: Replacing a word/number with another.
  3. Addition: Inserting words or figures not present in the passage.
  4. Spelling Error: Omission, repetition, or addition of letters in a word.

B. Half Mistakes

A half mistake is counted for:

  1. Spacing Errors: Not leaving space between words, or leaving double/multiple spaces.
  2. Wrong Capitalization: Typing uppercase instead of lowercase, or vice versa.
  3. Punctuation Errors: Omitting or adding incorrect punctuation marks.
  4. Transposition: Transposing letters within a word.

4. How Error Percentage is Calculated

The error percentage is calculated using the following formula:

Error % = [ Full Mistakes + (Half Mistakes / 2) ] / Total Words or Characters Typed x 100

Error Relaxation Limit

The allowed error limit varies depending on the category and specific post (some posts require higher standards like 5% or 7%):

  • General (UR): 20% max error (5% or 7% for specific DEST-preferred posts).
  • OBC / EWS: 25% max error (10% for specific DEST-preferred posts).
  • SC / ST / PwD: 30% max error.

5. Tips for Practice

  1. Practice on Real TCS-like Interfaces: The SSC CGL typing test is conducted by TCS. Practice on simulators that mimic this environment. You can practice for free on the Typing Nexus SSC practice portal.
  2. Focus on 95%+ Accuracy: Aim to keep your mistakes to a minimum to ensure you qualify for DEST-preferred posts.
