CRPF ASI Steno & HC Typing Test Rules
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) conducts a mandatory Typing Skill Test for the recruitment of Head Constable (Ministerial) and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Steno posts.
Due to its disabled backspace key and severe error penalties, clearing the CRPF typing test requires a highly disciplined approach.
1. Speed & Key Depressions Requirement
The skill test is conducted on computers under the following standards:
- English Typing Speed: Minimum 35 WPM (equivalent to 10,500 KDPH).
- Hindi Typing Speed: Minimum 30 WPM (equivalent to 9,000 KDPH).
- Test Duration: 10 minutes.
2. Keyboard Layout and Font Rules
- English: Standard QWERTY layout.
- Hindi: Unicode Mangal Font with the Remington Gail keyboard layout.
3. The Strict Editing Rule: Backspace is Disabled
- No Edits: The Backspace, Delete, and arrow keys are disabled during the exam.
- First Impression: You cannot correct or modify any typed letters. You must keep typing forward.
4. Error Relaxation and Penalty Formula
CRPF allows a 5% error margin on the total typed words. Errors beyond this relaxation limit are penalized heavily using the standard paramilitary subtraction method.
The Penalty Formula:
For every mistake beyond the 5% relaxation limit, 10 words are subtracted from your total typed words to calculate your net speed:
Net Speed (WPM) = [Total Words Typed - (Mistakes beyond 5% x 10)] / 10 Minutes
5. Tips to Clear the CRPF Typing Test
- Practice in Strict Mode: Always practice with your backspace key completely disabled. You can configure this setting for free on the Typing Nexus Exam Simulator.
- Focus on 98%+ Accuracy: Since 1 mistake beyond the 5% margin deducts 10 words, accuracy is far more important than raw speed. Maintain a steady, calm rhythm.
- Keyboard Travel: Practice on standard desktop keyboards with deep key travel to match the mechanical/membrane keyboards used in CRPF exam centers.
